Paul asks…
Is Meijer brand dog food a healthy choice for my dog?
The store brand.
My dog is a beagle mutt, around 20 pounds, almost 5 years old.
I just wanna know whether or not the brand of food I’m feeding him now is ok.
If not, what would you recommend that is reasonably priced?

Benjamin answers:
Maybe its just me but i cant figure out which brand you are talking about… I googled it and im getting, purina one, iams and beniful for results…
My rule of thumb is the first ingrident must be a meat. Lamb meal, chicken meal..ect. If it says lamb/chicken byproduct that is the junk meat. I dont think corn is as bad as its rap, as long as it is GROUND corn, it IS digestible.
–one thing that is a big no no is Meat by-product. Its not specific for a reason. It can include dead, diseased and dying animal meat.. Mmm sounds yummy huh? Ick!
Here is what meat meal is: Warning gross futage:
Read the list of ingridents, everything before the “amimal fat” is what the food is mostly made up of. If you dont think their is enough meat content and cant afford a most expensive brand them suplement. Give your dog some egg (cooked) or peice of chicken breat with his meal.
I feed Nature’s Recipe. Its about $1 per pound at petsmart and has Lamb Meal.
I also really like Blue Buffalo (its more expensive though and was too rich for my dog causing loose stool, exen with a 2 week transition period.)

William asks…
What foods should I use in a Raw Diet for my dog? What are healthy?
I want to put my dog on a half raw diet. Is this okay?
If so what foods should I give him?
I already give him a raw egg once a week or so to boost protein and calcium. also it is suppose to make his fur healthier?
Is this true?
What are some other good foods to feed him?
I will still be feeding him normal dry dog food [i think i have pedigree or purina right now] but i want him to be as healthy as possible. so i would like to add more raw foods in his diet.

Benjamin answers:
I feed primarily a high quality kibble but supplement with raw here and there.
You need to toss the Purina and/or Pedigree and use a high quality kibble for starters. Something like Orijen, Acana, Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Wellness and so on.
Then you need research as much as you can about raw feeding. Dogs need not only raw meat and eggs, but bone, liver, and other organs.
My dogs favorite meal, a whjole raw chicken (but he is 120lbs…my little guy likes chicken quarters with bits of organ added.)

Donna asks…
Why does my dog have bloody urine? Can anyone provide some insight on the results of her blood work?
We adopted a little Yorkie/Chihuahua mix a year ago and since then we’ve had to take her in to the vet on a regular basis for everything from fever, an eye infection, to a stomach illness. Six months ago we noticed her urine had become darker, and that she was drinking a lot for water for being such a small indoor dog, so we took her in again and they diagnosed her with Ehrlichia and prescribed some antibiotics. It worked for a while, and she had no noticeable problems until her urine started to appear bloody, and that’s when we immediately took her back to the vet, who gave us more antibiotics. It cleared the blood up for a few weeks, until the bloody urine came back. So we took her in again, and they gave her a urine and blood test. The urine test was negative but her blood test revealed that her ALT was 10x above normal, her Creatine was low, Cholesterol was low, her Eosinophils were high, and platelets were low.
Our vet advised us to put her on a daily regimen of 100 mg of SAM-E, 50 mg of Doxycycline, 12.5 mg of Vitamin K, 250 mg of Milk Thistle, and 1 capsule of Yunnan Paiyao every 8-12 hours when we see any blood in her urine.
She’s only 8 lbs, so been she’s sleeping a lot, shedding a lot more than usual and losing her appetite. We’re going to take her in this week for a biolysis test. They recommend that she gets a biolysis, x-ray, and then a sonogram to see if they can’t determine what exactly is wrong.
I’m wondering if anyone out there might have any ideas, in case they’ve every witnessed a dog with the same symptoms or perhaps had to deal with a sick pup.
It’s heartbreaking and I just want to give her the best care that we can afford, so any insight would be helpful.

Benjamin answers:
How did they diagnose her with ehrlichia? Were tick titers done?
As far as the rest of her bloodwork, her alt is extremely high- could be liver disease, could be cushings, could be tick disease, could be liver cells having a bad day, could be the way the sample was handled, could be because your dog is over weight, etc
low creatine is usually not an issue
low cholesterol usually not an issue
low platelets- was the platelet estimate low or adequate? Low platelets with an adequate estimate usually means there were clumps in the sample which is an invitro phenom and nothing to worry about. If the estimate was low as well, this suggests some sort of clotting issue, tick disease, etc.
A bipopsy should be the third option. Not the first. Xrays and ultrasound first, then the biopsy.
What other blood work was done? Clotting panel?
Treating with doxy, vitamin k, and milk thistle is a good treatment plan until you find out whats going on.
Just out of curiosity, is she overweight? You mentioned she is sleeping a lot and losing hair. Has her thyroid been checked? Has she been tested for cushings? Those are classic signs of cushings. As well as the high liver enzyme and low platelets.

Mark asks…
Does my dog have a throat infection/cold?
Yesterday mid-morning (Australia) my nine year old Border Collie started to cough raspy. This proceeded into the afternoon, until she began to vomit incessantly. Her vomit contained very little stomach contents, and was mostly foam and mucusy. We took her to an animal hospital and they diagnosed her with an infection in her throat and prescribed us some medication to stop her from coughing. She does eat a RAW diet, but because my dog was so easy to handle, the vet had a good look down her throat and there were no bones clogging, and she told us her heart and lungs appear to be in very good shape. She has stopped coughing since the visit to the animal hospital, but is lethargic (which I assume is a side affect from the medication). This morning I noticed a yellow discharge from her nose, and was wondering if this would be a symptom of her throat infection or something more serious.
She is up to date with her vaccinations.

Benjamin answers:
Give the vet a quick call. It couldn’t hurt to let him know. Dont forget to mention the lethargy.

Chris asks…
I’m looking for the healthiest, safest dry dog food out there. I heard commercial ingredients are horrible.

Benjamin answers:
Well i feed Solid Gold hund-n-flockin all stages. But there are others that aren’t so pricey.
Canidae is an excellent food.
Also Blue Buffalo, Innova, Chicken Soup for the dog Lover’s soul. And i have a friend that uses Wellness.
Edit:
considering that vets are only given a 2 week course in dog food nutrition and those classes are taught at vet schools BY THE PPL WHO MAKE COMMERCIAL DOG FOODS…ill go w/what a dog nutritionist says over a vet that has no clue any day.
Luckily my vet has educated himself on dog nutrition and neither sells commercial dog food in his clinic nor recommends it. It IS crap.

Thomas asks…
My 7 y/o dog has a cyst on his eyelid?
Serious, knowledgeable answers only please..
My dog is a black lab / rhodesian ridgeback mix. He has what I first thought was a stye on his upper eye lid. It swelled a bit, then went away. returned, went mostly away.
I had a vet look at it today because now it is pretty big – over the past 2 weeks it has not really gone down. My regular vet was not in, and myh dog also had an ear infection that needed treatment. The vet looked at, also looked under the lid and said she could see where it was draining. The vet looked at it, said I needed to try to get it down, then we would try to do a resection. I asked if it was cancerous, she would said she would not know for sure until they did a biopsy. I work in the “human” medical field and know that a good surgeon can usual tell be clinical impressions what something may or not be, so I pinned her down. I told her I do not expect guarantees but… she finally said she doubted it was serious and doubted it was cancerous, but I needed to get it back down in size. I asked for suggestions, and the only thing she had to say was “If warm compresses worked before, try it again”.
My question is this… has anyone gone through this with their dog? What worked and what did not. The vet tech said it did look like it was draining now…
Any knowledgeable advise would be most appreciated. I will follow up with my regular vet – a senior partner in the group – in 2 weeks.

Benjamin answers:
This is called a chalazion. Most chalazions are treated with warm compresses to the eyelid to promote healing and circulation of blood to the inflamed area. In addition, the vet may prescribe an antibiotic drop or ointment to be used immediately after the compresses. If the chalazion persists and is causing an unsightly lump, it can be removed surgically through the inside of the lid. The primary treatment is application of warm compresses for 10 to 20 minutes at least 4 times a day. This may soften the hardened oils blocking the duct and promote drainage and healing.

Sharon asks…
Help, I think I may have Rabies!?
Ok I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and I think I may have contracted rabies, this is a long question i warn you, so please help me if you don’t mind reading…
Ok so first read this: http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/rabies.html
Alright now I will tell you my story about rabies i think i may have gotten;
So yesterday my friend invited me over to see his new dog, it is 4 months old and absolutely adorable. He is a german shepard and border Collie mixed. Anyways when i saw him he was in the backyard and since i am in canada it was cold and snowy, and it was a record breaking 7 degrees , hence, everything melting. So anyways this gog was all muddy from the mud, when he saw us (my friend and i) he jumped on us so happy and playful, the dog however licked an open cut on me, scratched me and got the doggieness all over me(all my accident of course) i had to go home and i ate something without washing my hands quickly, i was in a rush to get somewhere. So i got freaked. Today i was in the kitchen and accidentally broke a glass and poked my finger, what if rabies got in my blood because a)the possible rabies from the slobber and dirty paws got all over my kitchen from me transfering them, hence later getting into my cut 1 day later and b) because the dogness of the dog got on my coat and clothes and i put my coat on my begd with the germs side on it, i slep in it and put my fingers touching my eyes to rid of the discharge in the morning and that is a open mucus membrane.
my friend said his pupy kept throwing up all the time, i aske dif she was rabid(as a joke yet i was half serious!) and he said if he was he(my friend) would be dead, he said he was up to date on his shots.
So am i being paranoid?I asked my mother is i could have gotten rabies and she said”pfft” not as a house pet.
soo..what do you think i should do?
like the dog wasnt rabid looking but i thought if it had rabies too early to experience symptoms, hence, spreading the disease to others..
what if dog spit got in the air and i brethed it in my nose, through my mouth and got in my eyes…mucus membrane!
also it says to rid of all contaminants of rabies like clothes, basically my whole room may ahve been and someclothes i didnt put in the wash the rest are with the wwash with everyones clothes i am so scared my om will do it!! im kiling everyone, its on my bed spreads i sleep an!helop what should i do??
also if the dog is alive for another week wil i be okay?
OMG also my nails were long at the time so dog like materials(spit ect) had gotten under them and i know its gross but i popped my pimples with my nails until they drew blood, and yeah i bit my tounch and picket at it im scared!
does the virus live in air, can i have it?is it too late if i dont get shots after 1 day
also isnt the owner as just a great a risk please help!

Benjamin answers:
No. You didn’t get rabies, if there are no effects and the dog is up-to-date on his shots you need not worry. Lol, next time wash your hands.

George asks…
A nutritional dog food recipe?
My boyfriend and I merged our homes and consequently, we now have 4 large dogs (3 labs & a german shepard, aka the 3 stooges & shep). I’m trying to find an affordable, healthy option to store-bought dry food. Does anyone have an easy recipe? How much should I feed them? They are all around 70 pounds.
Thank you!

Benjamin answers:
Good on you for trying to do some research.
A word of warning though, I’m not sure I’d trust the answers from anyone here on Y!A for something like this. I’ve seen a lot of ‘recipes’ floating around that are quite obviously not nutritionally balanced by any definition, but somehow they persist.
If you’re going to venture in to the realm of cooking for your pet, I’d recommend getting some good books on the subject, and doing some serious research, at the very least, talk to your vet before starting anything like this (maybe bring in a few sample recipes that you’ve found).
I’ve got a couple recipes around, I’d share them, but I don’t know with any degree of certainty that they are complete (they look it to me though). I don’t feed home made (in part) for exactly that reason, I’m not confident that I can do it right.
