If your breeder was reputable, the parents would have been certified clear of hip problems by OFA, and the eyes would have been certified by CERF. If the breeder did these checks, your pup is not toally immune to problems, but is a whole LOT less likely to have them. Here is a good website that explains some things that run in shibas: http://www.shibas.org/images/nsca.jpg

A regular vet exam and being aware of any changes in oyur dog will help catch problems early enough to treat. Good luck!

can anyone recommend a good dog food for dogs with food allergies?

I have two dogs, a maltese & cockerspaniel. The cocker got agressive from sevear ear infections, to calm him down he was neutered had a tonsilectomy & 2 ear scopes, antibiotic drops, oral meds. an allergy shot every 6 weeks and I have also been using a home made remedy made from vinegar, alchol and borac acid. Now non agressive dog, Better but still some problem with ears. Changed their food to Royal Canin 30 small bites. They loved it. Beautiful hair, the eye staining from tearing is gone! After eating it for 2 months the maltese started turning red around her hind-end and on her back legs, she started biting these areas until they were raw. I was told she was having problems with corn gluton in the food. Natural balance duck and potatoe formula was recommened. Been giving them this for 2weeks. They would not eat it at first so I had to mix the dry with can. They eat it but not very well. This is very expensive & It does not come in small bites, would another royal canin work?

Benjamin answers:

My maltese did that butt/tail chewing thing off and on for 15years. There was no reason that I could see. A lot of the time I think it was nerves. Has anything changed in your household to make her/him feel upset. I know it sounds silly, but little dogs as well as big can be greatly affected by changes in their enviroment. Have you tried just giving the dog a half a benadryl. This works wonders on dog allergies and doesn’t cost as much as essentially the same drug the vet would give. Best of luck.

I also always recommend Nutro dog food.

It is a good food but you can probably do better for around the same price:

I have researched this in depth since my poor dog died of kidney failure due to poor quality dog food!!(this is the only reason I answer these questions … to try and save a dogs life or at least to not let him/her suffer because of bad food)
Fromm Dog Food is Great for dogs and cats …http://www.frommfamily.com/ $42- $45 per 30 lb bag
NO fillers….some good quality grains….NO corn….gluten or by-products or wheat
ALL human grade food….fruits…veggies and probiotics!!WHOLE fruits and veggies!!!! Just like the kind we get at our grocery stores!
Check it out you wont regret it !FROMM 4 STAR product line is the best!!!!!!!

Http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/TOTW has a high protein content (not recommeded for non athletic dogs)
Taste of the Wild contains Ethoxyquin which is a toxic fish preservative. (TOTW says that the cooking process kills all of it but it scared me away from their product)
around $42 for a 30 lb bag …. Its the cheapest 6 star food ..

Http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ lots of great dog food choices on this site !!

Orijen and Welness are great but it is $60 – $80 for a 30 lb bag…high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogs(IMO)Orijen is WAY to high in protein for a non working/non-agility dog ..(IMO)
Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)
You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. They wont be at walmarts and the like… They are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etc

IF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.(IMO)

http://4healthdogfood.tripod.com/

there is also a brand called 4health at the tractor supply store.. It is only $30 for a 30 lb bag.. And it seems to be of good quality. (not as good as the foods mentioned above but it good for the price if you are on a tight budget.)

also of you go to http://www.tractorsupply.com you can get a printable $5 off coupon!!
They have tons of low and high end foods there(including TOTW and 4 Health)

Could my cat catch a disease from a new dog in the house?

My cat is 17 years old and a completely indoor cat. He was raised with a dog who was older and died a few years ago. The cat’s overall health is good, however we are not revaccinating him as he had a bad reaction to some of the vaccines (that lump that could turn into cancer at injection site for feluke and rabies) and vomitting etc.
If we got a young dog from a shelter who’s had all his shots, could he pass anything fatal onto my cat?
I think the dog to add some more interest to my cat’s life and I think he’d love another canine brother or sister, but if rescuing a dog from a shelter could kill my cat, I don’t want to risk it.

Benjamin answers:

First, good choice on the vaccinations with your kitty! I’m convinced one of my cats died fairly young (12) of a tumor and it was located right where she got the stupid rabies shot. I kick myself every time I think of it.

On the disease part, there’s almost nothing that can be transferred unless it’s flea/worm type stuff. So if the dog has been tested for worms and is on flea prevention, you’ll be good to go! Even worst case scenario, your kitty would end up needing a dewormer, but I can see why you’d want to avoid that. Also, there’s some evidence that kennel cough MIGHT be transferred from dog to cat. Just to be on the safe side, you might want to work with a humane society or a dog that’s been in a foster home rather than a large, busy, kill shelter where this can be more common. It wouldn’t be fatal, but you don’t want the headache and kitty might need antiobiotics if that happens.

Spent the night at the Vet with my dog, have any of you run into this?

I have a 4.75 yr old GSP female that up to now has not displayed any real signs of poor health.

My dog has gone from being healthy to having incontinence at night, vomiting all day today, and is lethargic and groggy, and losing weight fast…in 48 hours.

They did kidney tests, blood work, antifreeze tests, all of which showed nothing. They did xrays and they felt sure that she had either a tumor, growth, or something lodged in her stomach, but couldnt tell.

My question to any of you that may be experienced with dogs…do her symptoms seem parallel more to poison of some kind vs something blocking her stomach? Would cancer set in that fast and would a dog honestly go downhill that fast?

My concern is that I spent 4 hours and $500 and know no more than i did when I went in and my dog is still miserable. Every test the Vet did proved nothing and he kept wanting to do more tests, which I suppose makes sense but…at what point do you stop doing tests when you cant find the answer?
Thank you all kindly for your input and thoughts. It all helps.

She is in surgery this morning, I took her to her regular vet and we are certain now that something is obstructing her intestines, whether it is a swallowed sort of blockage or tumor, I wont know until I hear from the Vet.

It was a long long night, around 3am each breath became very very laborious and made rattling, gurgling sounds. I did all I could to make her comfortable until I could be there at the door this am with her in my arms…all I can do now is pray.

Thanks again, it means alot to those of you that extended yourselves on this question. Its very much appreciated!
Incidentally, i told the vet that its not that i am a rich man but to please do everything humanly possible for her so she can come home healthy again…money isnt an issue when its something you love that much. I hate to admit but shes the only thing I really even care about on this planet anymore…it makes me sound hateful but what I really mean is that she means the world to me.
Thank you Christina for your well wishes and your suggestion. They went in and found that she had a abnormally large gall bladder that was very inflamed. they expressed it and irrigated to clean it out, and are testing further for giardia and addisons.

You arent off at all with your suggestions, any of you and every one of them is sincerely respected and accepted with the concern only a fellow dog or pet lover could have. It helps me to know that I have access to people that care.

She is being treated at this time with an antibiotic, iv for dehydration, another for vomiting, and a pain medication which brought her heart rate down from 152 this am to a 100, give or take, which her Vet felt was at least positive sign.

it is not uncommon to lose dogs that have experienced this within 2-3 days after surgery so we arent out of the woods by any means, but we are one step closer to bringing my sweet lil stinky dog home. God bless all of you for your help!
Vet called at 1030 and here is what she told me:

she took her outside tonite and maggie walked well and had a spring in her step and urinated ok but she still did not want to drink water

maggies temp is good, her heart rate is good

she treated her with a small amount of steroid IN CASE its addisons

she will call me again between 830 and 930 am tomorrow, thought that it might be best if maggie stayed there one more day, which i am 100% fine with. i want her to get the best medical treatment she can

dr did some manual manipulation to stimulate her gall bladder and get it working again, felt that it had been successful

she felt that over all there was no bad news and that it was all good news and very possibly in another day she could come home if she continues to progress as shown tonite. what a wonderful report to get…

Benjamin answers:

I’m so sorry to read your story. – You said they’ tested for everything, and could not find anything – I may be way off beam, but please ask if Addison’s disease has been ruled out. High Potassium and low Sodium would be diagnostic for that. The symptoms you describe would be classic for an addisonian crisis.
I guess your vets will have thought of that, but many vets still believe its a rare condition and know too little about it… It is not rare at all any more! – So please ask, just to make sure.

Best wishes,

Is my dog sick? Here’s her symptoms, please help!?

Hi there, I’m worried my dog might be sick

She’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, she’s at a healthy weight, and she just turned 5 years old.
Here’s the symptoms i’ve noticed:
- She hasn’t eaten in approximately 2 and a half days.
- She’s got gas.
- I’m not sure but I don’t think she’s drinking as much water as normal.
- She’s been sleepier than normal and also excessively ‘clingy’.
- Her ears are obviously in trouble; they smell -very- bad and she’s always scratching them (I’ve started cleaning them with a solution from my vet and hydrogen peroxide, but i think she might have a more severe infection than the normal ‘long-eared dog‘ ear infection)
- I think she might not be hearing as well as normal.
- Her eyes are a little bloodshot and her nose is dry.

Please help me figure out if she’s sick!! I’m only sixteen and I want to take her to the vet but my parents don’t believe me that she’s sick. I’m really worried about her!
Thanks for all the speedy answers you guys. I was 99.999% positive she was sick, so thanks for confirming. I’m definitely going to just call the vet myself and have a ‘little chat’ with my parents about how to take care of our dog. Thanks again for the answers and support.

Sounds like your dog has several health problems, not just one!
Inform your dumb parents that they have a legal and moral responsibility to provide necessary veterinary care for a sock animal (which your dog is) and if they still ignore this, then call the human society. At least your poor dog will then get the care it deserves.
#
I feel sorry for you and your dog.

Ok I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and I think I may have contracted rabies, this is a long question i warn you, so please help me if you don’t mind reading…

Ok so first read this: http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/…

Alright now I will tell you my story about rabies i think i may have gotten;

So yesterday my friend invited me over to see his new dog, it is 4 months old and absolutely adorable. He is a german shepard and border Collie mixed. Anyways when i saw him he was in the backyard and since i am in canada it was cold and snowy, and it was a record breaking 7 degrees , hence, everything melting. So anyways this gog was all muddy from the mud, when he saw us (my friend and i) he jumped on us so happy and playful, the dog however licked an open cut on me, scratched me and got the doggieness all over me(all my accident of course) i had to go home and i ate something without washing my hands quickly, i was in a rush to get somewhere. So i got freaked. Today i was in the kitchen and accidentally broke a glass and poked my finger, what if rabies got in my blood because a)the possible rabies from the slobber and dirty paws got all over my kitchen from me transfering them, hence later getting into my cut 1 day later and b) because the dogness of the dog got on my coat and clothes and i put my coat on my begd with the germs side on it, i slep in it and put my fingers touching my eyes to rid of the discharge in the morning and that is a open mucus membrane.

my friend said his pupy kept throwing up all the time, i aske dif she was rabid(as a joke yet i was half serious!) and he said if he was he(my friend) would be dead, he said he was up to date on his shots.

So am i being paranoid?I asked my mother is i could have gotten rabies and she said”pfft” not as a house pet.

soo..what do you think i should do?

like the dog wasnt rabid looking but i thought if it had rabies too early to experience symptoms, hence, spreading the disease to others..

also if the dog is alive for another week wil i be okay?

OMG also my nails were long at the time so dog like materials(spit ect) had gotten under them and i know its gross but i popped my pimples with my nails until they drew blood, and yeah i bit my tounch and picket at it im scared!

I can tell you from experience ( I grew up in Buffalo,NY ) that yeah you need to go to a doctor, a psychiatric doctor, and find out why your so paranoid about everyday happenings. All living things carry different types of germs.Just think how many are on your toothbrush everyday when you brush your teeth. And by the way, germs live way better off when it’s nice and warm.

Is tail docking and ear cropping cosmetic surgery?

Canine cosmetic surgery: do you consider tail docking and ear cropping to be cosmetic surgery?

It is safe to assume that no responsible dog owner or veterinary practitioner would object on moral or ethical grounds to emergency surgery that repairs an animal’s broken limb, prevents it from bleeding to death or removes a lethally cancerous tumor from its pancreas or lungs.

The same might be said about certain elective surgical procedures, such as early spaying, which will almost surely prevent a female dog from experiencing mammary cancer later in life and or prevent pyometra castration, which, among other things, will keep a male dog contributing to the growing overpopulation of unwanted puppies.

However, tail docking and ear cropping is an elective surgical procedure so should it be allowed?

Benjamin answers:

I’m not sure what breed / size your dog is but the brand we use makes food for all dog sizes. We don’t use wet dog food, so I can’t help with that.

We use Nutri Source (for small breed puppies, but they make it for other dogs and puppies too).

It’s ALL NATURAL and made with
REAL CHICKEN……NO BY PRODUCTS
NO WHEAT
Organic Selenium and Zinc
Balanced Omega 3 & 6
with DHA

For info go to their website….

I have a Puggle (Pug / Beagle mix) and they can have sensitive digestive tracts. My puppy has never had diarhea or any stomach problems with this food. He is growing and developing wonderfully. He is healthy and happy. So I would highly suggest Nutri Source.
