Dog health question?

Hi! I own a Lab, who is now 3 years old. Anyway, yesterday I noticed he was a bit lethargic. Although he would play with you and get all excited, I noticed he wasn’t his usual boundless energetic mood. In short he was hyper but noticably less than the usual HYPER.

I only suspected that he was coming down with a fever/cold. I dunno. I wanted to bring him to the vet, but our vet is out of town for a month. He still eats a lot, but not with the usual ravenous gusto and he still drinks water. He urinates regularly and his stool is solid (not diarrhea soft / bloody / parasitic). This would be his first time to get sick. He might have a slight temperature but I couldn’t really tell from his ears. No infection though. Only thing that clues me in is that he sneezed 2x yesterday & he had rheum (eye booger) in his left eye.

Anyway, my questions:
1. What could my dog be suffering from?

2. What’s a good treatment (vitamin/remedy/etc)

No vet around and I hope God makes him well soon.

Benjamin answers:

I find it hard to believe that any reasonable vet would leave town for a whole month with no back-up vet for his clients. Surely he is referring his clients to another vet while he is gone.

1. Could be an upper respiratory disease. Or allergies. Or he could just have finally grown up and is no longer a puppy. My friend was convinced that her VERY active boxer mix was sick for a while when she was about two. Nothing major ever came from it and we finally decided that she had just outgrown puppyhood and mellowed with maturity. Or it could be just about anything.

2. If you are concerned that it is an illness, the best treatment would be a vet visit. Home remedies are often ineffective and can be downright dangerous in some cases. Especially when you don’t know what’s wrong. There HAS to be another vet somewhere in your area. Even when I lived in a tiny little rural county with all of two stoplights in the entire county, there were at least a dozen vets within a one hour drive.

If so what foods should I give him?
I already give him a raw egg once a week or so to boost protein and calcium. also it is suppose to make his fur healthier?
Is this true?
What are some other good foods to feed him?
I will still be feeding him normal dry dog food [i think i have pedigree or purina right now] but i want him to be as healthy as possible. so i would like to add more raw foods in his diet.

Benjamin answers:

I feed primarily a high quality kibble but supplement with raw here and there.

You need to toss the Purina and/or Pedigree and use a high quality kibble for starters. Something like Orijen, Acana, Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, Wellness and so on.

Then you need research as much as you can about raw feeding. Dogs need not only raw meat and eggs, but bone, liver, and other organs.

My dogs favorite meal, a whjole raw chicken (but he is 120lbs…my little guy likes chicken quarters with bits of organ added.)

If not, what would you recommend that is reasonably priced?

Maybe its just me but i cant figure out which brand you are talking about… I googled it and im getting, purina one, iams and beniful for results…

My rule of thumb is the first ingrident must be a meat. Lamb meal, chicken meal..ect. If it says lamb/chicken byproduct that is the junk meat. I dont think corn is as bad as its rap, as long as it is GROUND corn, it IS digestible.

–one thing that is a big no no is Meat by-product. Its not specific for a reason. It can include dead, diseased and dying animal meat.. Mmm sounds yummy huh? Ick!
Here is what meat meal is: Warning gross futage:

Read the list of ingridents, everything before the “amimal fat” is what the food is mostly made up of. If you dont think their is enough meat content and cant afford a most expensive brand them suplement. Give your dog some egg (cooked) or peice of chicken breat with his meal.

I feed Nature’s Recipe. Its about $1 per pound at petsmart and has Lamb Meal.

I also really like Blue Buffalo (its more expensive though and was too rich for my dog causing loose stool, exen with a 2 week transition period.)
