Mandy asks…

If I get a certificate of good health for my dog to travel will I be able to travel the next day?

We weren’t going to take our dog with us to Mexico but we decided last minute that she’s going too.

She has her appointment tomorrow morning to get her certificate and we leave Friday Morning.

Is that possible? Or do we have to wait a while?

Benjamin answers:

If you’re coming from the US then there is no quarantine for Mexico or Canada and your vet fills out the same USDA paperwork that they would fill out if you were going from state to state. You should be fine getting the certificate the day before you leave. If you’re flying be sure to check with your airline on their travel requirements for dogs.

    Benjamin answers:

It sounds as if it might be Cherry Eye which is a condition which does occur in German Shepherds.

Less likely that it could be Pannus.
Take him to another vet for a second opinion.

      Robert asks…

help me please i am soo scared! sorry for re posting!?

Ok I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and I think I may have contracted rabies, this is a long question i warn you, so please help me if you don’t mind reading…

Ok so first read this: http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/…

      Alright now I will tell you my story about rabies i think i may have gotten;

So yesterday my friend invited me over to see his new dog, it is 4 months old and absolutely adorable. He is a german shepard and border Collie mixed. Anyways when i saw him he was in the backyard and since i am in canada it was cold and snowy, and it was a record breaking 7 degrees , hence, everything melting. So anyways this gog was all muddy from the mud, when he saw us (my friend and i) he jumped on us so happy and playful, the dog however licked an open cut on me, scratched me and got the doggieness all over me(all my accident of course) i had to go home and i ate something without washing my hands quickly, i was in a rush to get somewhere. So i got freaked. Today i was in the kitchen and accidentally broke a glass and poked my finger, what if rabies got in my blood because a)the possible rabies from the slobber and dirty paws got all over my kitchen from me transfering them, hence later getting into my cut 1 day later and b) because the dogness of the dog got on my coat and clothes and i put my coat on my begd with the germs side on it, i slep in it and put my fingers touching my eyes to rid of the discharge in the morning and that is a open mucus membrane.

my friend said his pupy kept throwing up all the time, i aske dif she was rabid(as a joke yet i was half serious!) and he said if he was he(my friend) would be dead, he said he was up to date on his shots.

So am i being paranoid?I asked my mother is i could have gotten rabies and she said”pfft” not as a house pet.

soo..what do you think i should do?

like the dog wasnt rabid looking but i thought if it had rabies too early to experience symptoms, hence, spreading the disease to others..
25 minutes ago – 4 days left to answer.
      Additional Details
what if dog spit got in the air and i brethed it in my nose, through my mouth and got in my eyes…mucus membrane!

also it says to rid of all contaminants of rabies like clothes, basically my whole room may ahve been and someclothes i didnt put in the wash the rest are with the wwash with everyones clothes i am so scared my om will do it!! im kiling everyone, its on my bed spreads i sleep an!helop what should i do??

also if the dog is alive for another week wil i be okay?

OMG also my nails were long at the time so dog like materials(spit ect) had gotten under them and i know its gross but i popped my pimples with my nails until they drew blood, and yeah i bit my tounch and picket at it im scared!

does the virus live in air, can i have it?is it too late if i dont get shots after 1 day

also isnt the owner as just a great a risk please help!
my stomach really hrurts all of a sudden!! but i ate egg salad just recently and i have gass…

      Benjamin answers:

      1- RELAX!!!
#2- You said this was a puppy right? Puppies are vacinated from birth, unless the dog is bitten by an animal with rabies, you are fine!
#3- Always wash your hands after playing with dogs, even though their mouths & slobber are cleaner than the human mouth, they do lick their own behinds!!!
#4- Take a deep breath, you arent going to die, just wash your face with good cleanser so you know that no bacteria got into the pimple.
      #5- Take another deep breath!!!
#6- Remember that an animal with rabies isnt playful & drooling on you, they foaming at the mouth and angry…. They bite,, they don’t play & lick & slopper…
#7- Calm down… Your working yourself into a frenzie!!!

Doberman Dog Health Problem, Lymphoma, Infection, Unknown. Please Help?

        Hi,

My 9 month old Doberman who until two weeks ago has been totally healthy, he developed a swollen lymph node under the left side of his neck. I took him the day I noticed the swelling to the local canine emergency hospital and was told that he had a high fever and that the swelling was likely due to an infection. The doctor prescribed Cephalexin 500mgs 1.5 tablets every 12hrs ( used to treat bacteria ). After 4 days the medication had no effect, the swelling had worsen and at this point the right lymph node has mildly swollen. I then took him to my local veterinarian who has been a doctor for over 30years. He conducted various tests; temperature, lymph node cell sample (taken by empty needle, observed under a microscope), blood work, urine test. Once the tests were complete he then prescribed for Giovanni (my dog) Prednisone 50mg (used to reduce swelling) and Amoxi-Clav 375mg ( used to treat bacteria). The next day I received a call from the doctor saying he reviewed all the samples and that Giovanni and an infection likely due to eating sticks, I was instructed to continue with the medications and have a follow up with him in a week. Three days later the dog was practically back to normal, the swelling had decreased dramatically and was only present in the left lymph node. When I returned for the check up appointment this is what the vet had to say: A)The swelling in down dramatically. B) His fever is gone. C) He appears totally healthy. Then he noticed that a lymph node on the back of his left leg had mildly swollen, this started to worry me into thinking it was lymphoma. The doctor told me that it is very likely to be lymphoma and that I would need to start chemotherapy if it is. I was told that the Prednisone might be masking the cancer by reducing the swelling while the cells are still rapidly multiplying. The vet instructed me to stop giving him the Prednisone and once again prescribed Amoxi-Clav. It has now been over 5 days, I’m starting to get really worried about my best friend, the worse thing in life is watching the one thing you love and the one thing that loves you the most suffer right in front of your eyes. The lymph nodes under his neck are now swollen to the point where there prohibiting him to bark or breath properly. Every doctor he has seen has something different to say and something different to prescribe, I just want an answer as to what is wrong with him. A biopsy will be done on Giovanni hopefully within the next few days to finally determine the truth.

The reason why created this post is to gain some insight and hear advice from anyone who has experienced this before, my vet is away on vacation for another 2 days until then I have to watch my dog suffer with no explanation has to what he has.

If anyone has experienced this same matter could you please let know what to expect for the future… Keep in mind I already know that without a biopsy there is no certainty has to what my dog has.

        Thanks in advance!!!

        Benjamin answers:

First of all, chemotherapy is the worst thing you can do to ANY animal. The facts are that humans have a 2.1% chance of surviving 5 years after chemotherapy. It is abusive and very destructive practice. Breast cancer patients that get chemotherapy have a 1.4% chance of surviving after 5 years if they get the abusive treatment. Does that sound like a cure to you?

Dogs are more sensitive to things than humans in many ways. Smoking around dogs is very destructive because their lung tissue is smaller than humans and they always get lung cancer from the second hand smoke and die young.

Most dogs get sick because of the terrible foods they are being fed. Those pretty packages and all that hype about special diets, etc. For dogs is bunk. Dogs, in the wild and their ancestors ate raw meat almost exclusively. When you feed dogs GRAIN, especially the kind they put in dog food, it’s a filler and cheap, but it’s not what dogs need or really want. These foods make your dog sick and they get diseases just like humans do that eat the SAD diet (standard American diet).

If you believe the dog food companies really care about your dog, you need to free yourself from the lies you believe. Try this diet and I think you will see a great improvement in your dog’s health. 3 days raw lamb and then 1 day table scraps of vegetables (organic). Repeat this for the rest of his life. He will thank you and you will see him live to be in his 20′s.

In regard to the lymphoma issue, the dog has an infection raging in his body somewhere that is promoting bad lymphatic drainage. Most likely it is in him in his intestines or teeth. Dogs respond to human food and drugs incredibly well.

The reason every doctor has something different to say is that they do not know what is ailing your dog. It is most likely nutritional and they have NO clue about that. What they learn about nutrition is taught as a part of some program developed by the dog food manufacturers.

        Good luck to you

          Lisa asks…

Besides regular dog food what else can I feed by 4 month old dogs so they grow strong and healthy?

I have a male pit bull and female labrador. They are both 4 months old. I want to feed them human food that will make them strong and healthy.

I have fed them chicken soup and dry corn flake cereal already.

I have and will always stay away from the basics such as sea food, sugar and cow milk.

What do you recommend I feed them? Thanks for you help!

          Benjamin answers:

Fruits & veggies are good for you dog to. Mine love apple peaces, carrots, watermelon, and you can also freeze bananas, apples and watermelon for a summer treat Stay away from grapes, raisins, onions & garlic and make sure to remove the cores & seeds from food b/f giving. :)

Cost of a dog health certificate?

I am going to be traveling with my dog and the state requires a health certificate, Does anyone know what this might cost? I’ll have to get an exam/check up for my dog then get a health certificate. Thanks!

            Benjamin answers:

            Hi,

When I traveled from Georgia to the Netherlands with my dogs the health certificate costed me $25.

I went to the vet within 30 days that I left and they filled out the certificate. That costed me about $50 to get the shots up to date that they require and the certificate. Not to mention the 60 mile travel to the only place in Georgia that I could actually get the stupid stamp to certify that it was valid.

This will obviously vary state to state. Check first with your vet.

Good luck, but it all eventually falls into place and is doable. Step by step.

My dog has an eye infection, how can i cure it?

My Brittany Spaniel has a eye infection, white stuff is covering part of the eye and around the inside looks somewhat swollen and red. I’ve been cleaning it out with my contact lense soultion and Q-Tips, is this going to do any good for it? or should i take her to the vet? because i fear going to the vet for nothing because last time my hamster had an eye infection the vet just prescribed saline solution….. should i just keep doing what im doing for her eye by cleaning it out 2 times a day?

              Benjamin answers:

Take her to the vet. A eye infection is not something to mess around with you will more then likely need an antibiotic ointment.

can a cat with a respiratory infection pass it on to my dog?

I took my kitten to the vet and she was put on clavomax. Now my dog is showing symptoms of a cold with sneezing, runny nose, ect… did the cat get him sick or is it just a coincedence?

                Benjamin answers:

I suppose it just may be possible.
I know that upper respiratory infections are very contagious.
We don’t have any dogs, but we have 4 cats and one of them is very prone to URI and every single time she gets one within two or three days her Sister has it too.

Just to be on the safe side I’ll call the Vet and get his/her opinion.

I hope the Kitten and dog get well soon.

is there a really a different between the kibble found @ the grocery store?

and the higher end kibble, that you can purchase at global pet foods and other pet speciality stores? everyone will tell you that there is no comparison of a kibble diet and raw meat diet – and that the raw food diet is HEAPS better. but what about the different types of kibble? if you’re feeding your dog orijen, evo, go! natural, acana, california natural, or wellness over kibbles n bits, purina, caesars, alpo, pedigree, IS THERE REALLY THAT BIG OF A DIFFERENCE? WILL YOUR DOG REALLY BE THAT MUCH HEALTHIER?

                  Benjamin answers:

There is a HUGE difference. Low quality food use fillers. They do nothing for your dog or it’s health other than make it feel full when it eats. They use cheap grains as fillers that are not digestible and can be harmful to your dogs. Not to mention low quality foods often have dyes and other additives that are outlawed in human grade food because they are dangerous.

Raw diet and high quality foods are so much better for your dog. If you want more information you should do your research.

                    Your Questions About Dog Health

                    February 20, 2012 by
                    Filed under All about dogs

                    Lisa asks…

What is the significance of being vegetarian in spirituality? Does our body suits to eat non vegetarian food?

A fair look at the evidence shows that humans are optimized for eating exclusively plant foods, and not meat.

Human anatomy: We’re most similar to other herbivores, and drastically different from carnivores.

Longevity & health: The more meat we eat, the sicker we get. Meat is poison to us. It’s the primary reason we get heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and every other major degenerative disease. If eating meat were natural, it wouldn’t destroy our health.

Physical performance: People have much better endurance when they don’t eat meat — whether they’re professional athletes or not.

There are three types of animals

                    Meat Eaters
                    Plant Eaters
                    Fruit Eaters

Meat eaters have sharp teeth (Canine teeth) to pierce tough hide and to spear and tear flesh
Plant and Fruit Eaters have Molars (flat, back teeth) for grinding their food.

Humans have more Molar teeth however also have 4 sharp teeth’s.
Hence god has given us the flexibility to have non vegetarian, however our body is designed to eat plants and fruits only.

Human characteristics are in every way like the fruit eaters, very similar to the grass- eater, and very unlike the meat eaters.

The human digestive system, tooth and jaw structure, and bodily functions are completely different from carnivorous animals.

As in the case of the anthropoid ape, the human digestive system is twelve times the length of the body; our skin has millions of tiny pores to evaporate water and cool the body by sweating; we drink water by suction like all other vegetarian animals; our tooth and jaw structure is vegetarian; and our saliva is alkaline and contains ptyalin for predigestion of grains. Human beings clearly are not carnivores by physiology — our anatomy and digestive system show that we must have evolved for millions of years living on fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables.
Furthermore, it is obvious that our natural instincts are non-carnivorous. Most people have other people kill their meat for them and would be sickened if they had to do the killing themselves. Instead of eating raw meat as all flesh-eating animals do, humans boil, bake, or fry it and disguise it with all kinds of sauces and spices so that it bears no resemblance to its raw state. One scientist explains it this way: “A cat will salivate with hungry desire at the smell of a piece of raw flesh but not at all at the smell of fruit. If man could delight in pouncing upon a bird, tear its still-living limbs apart with his teeth, and suck the warm blood, one might conclude that nature provided him with meat-eating instinct. On the other hand, a bunch of luscious grapes makes his mouth water, and even in the absence of hunger he will eat fruit because it tastes so good.”
Scientists and naturalists, including the great Charles Darwin who gave the theory of evolution, agree that early humans were fruit and vegetable eaters and that throughout history our anatomy has not changed. The great Swedish scientist von Linné states: “Man’s structure, external and internal, compared with that of the other animals, shows that fruit and succulent vegetables constitute his natural food.”

It is human nature to want to feel that what we’re doing is right, proper, and logical. When we’re confronted with something that suggests that our current practices are not the best ones, it’s uncomfortable. We can either consider that our choices may not have been the best ones, which is extremely disturbing, or we can reject that premise without truly considering it, so that we don’t have to feel bad about our actions. That’s the more comfortable approach.
And we do this by searching our minds for any arguments we can for why the challenge must be wrong, to justify our current behavior.

                    Conclusion:
I am not saying you should not eat non vegetarian food; however it is recommended to consume less to have better health.

In spirituality, it is recommended to not to have non vegetarian food, as it disturbs your digestive system and in turn spoils your spiritual activities like prayers, meditation etc.

                    Benjamin answers:

Gentleman, you have already stated very clearly that our body suits only veg. Foods.

Inspite of this, we see in papers that a man ate mud, tubelight etc.Does that mean that you can eat anything?I’m mentioning this only to say that you can train your body to eat anything you can.So the body will accept non veg food even if the body is structured only for veg food.

In my kriya class, conducted by the Isha foundation they very much give importance to veg food but not cooked food but raw vegetables and fruits.only pulses & grains are cooked & eaten.

In ancient times the people who are in the spiritual path have categorised the food as the positive energy food, the negative energy food & zero energy food. They don’t count for callories or the nutrients in it.

Th positive energy foods are all the raw vegetables & fruits.
The negative energy foods are very few & they are bringals,[aubergines] onions, chillies[pepper is the best] asafoetida, garlic. Now they have included coffee & tea.0 enrgy foods are potatoes, tomatoes, all root vegetables like yam, tapioca etc.

How did they test their food? They tested with the rudraksha mala[chain] which they wear it. It has the power to find it.When you bring the rudraksha to a positive energy food it rotates clockwise, negative food- anticlockwise, 0 energy food -it moves like a pendulam to the left & the right.

So those who are in the spiritual path should take only positive energy food.I have cut down all the negative foods, but when i go for functions , marriages parties i take, but i limit myself with the food.Higher they develop in their spirituality they automatically switch in for veg.foods
